Printer sharing is done when there are multiple computers that are networked or connected to a single printer. This type of networking can be done in a work environment or in a home that has multiple computers in use such as laptops. When there is a printing problem on one or more computers you will need to troubleshoot to find the cause of the problem.
If you are having problems printing to a networked printer the first thing to to is to make sure the network connection is setup properly. This can be done by running the Network Setup Wizard to configure the computer to the network. The Network Setup Wizard can be accessed by double clicking the icon in the Control Panel. When the Network Setup Wizard appears click the "Next" button to start the setup process. The next screen will display a checklist. Before continuing the setup wizard review the checklist to make sure that everything is setup correctly.
A Guest Account is required for all network access to a computer running the Windows operating system. If the guest account is not setup properly computers will not be able to connect for file or printer sharing. A guest account can be setup by typing "cmd" into the Run option from the Start menu. This will display a DOS window with a command prompt. Type "net user guest" to see if the guest account is active. If the account is active than the guest account is properly setup for network access.
The host computer on the network will have a folder on the system for each computer that is connected on the network. Each of these folders on the machine needs to have sharing enabled. You will first need to know the computer name for each folder. This can be done by double clicking on the System icon in the Control Panel and then selecting the Computer Name tab. When you have verified the computer names for each folder go back to the Start menu and select Run. Type in "fsmgmt.msc" and then click the "OK' button to view the Shared Folders dialog box. Select the Shares folder on the left to view a list of shared folders. If all of the computer names are displayed each folder is set for sharing.
Once all of the settings have been verified you can test the connection to make sure that the computers can connect with one another. This can be done by typing "\\machinename" into the Run option from the Start menu. The "machinename" is the computer name for a computer that is connected to the network. When you click the "OK" button a window will appear with all folders that can be shared. If you can open any of the folders the connection is working correctly.
