- 1Find Out More About the Person. Once you have booked the interview and know who you are going to interview, do some research about them. If you are interviewing someone famous or well-known for a newspaper or magazine, you may advertise this in issues released before the one with the interview. Popular search engines, like Google or Yahoo, should help with research for famous people, but some may be harder. Social networking sites could help you learn more, or possibly talking to family members, acquaintances and friends of the person you are interviewing.
- 2Ask the Right Questions. After finding out all there is to about the person before the interview, you need to know what to ask them. Some topics might make people feel uncomfortable and unwilling to answer, but a real journalist gets to the bottom of things. Good topics include work, school and family, without asking for too private or personal details. If there was recently a scandal or a rumor about them, after asking a few questions to make them feel more comfortable, ask for opinions and details of this.
- 3Record Everything. Write down or record everything. Most interviewers choose a tape recorder, because when they write down the article or interview, they will be able to record the exact words. If you fabricate or change their answers, it could create problems.
- 4Act Calm and Collected. When someone is interviewing you, you will want to seem cool and confident, and it's the same when you interview someone else. You want to make the comfortable, so ask the questions you originally planned without changing them, and ask them kindly. Be friendly with them, and they will answer honestly and coolly.
